The trajineras are direct descendants of the pre-Hispanic boats used by the Xochimilca people since the 14th century to navigate between canals and chinampas, an ingenious floating farming system. During the Porfirian era, they became leisure boats for the elite, decorated with natural flowers and women’s names as romantic gestures. Over time, paper-mâché ornaments replaced the flowers, but the tradition endured. In the early 20th century, Xochimilco emerged as a major tourist destination, with new docks, reforestation of the Nativitas forest, and local legends that deepened its mystical charm.
